Charlie Sheen, the American television star, put a knife to his wife's throat and threatened to kill her during a violent quarrel on Christmas Day, his wife has told police.
Sheen, the highest paid actor on American television, spent Christmas Day in jail and was charged with domestic violence, assault and menacing after his wife Brooke Mueller called police and claimed he had pushed her during the fight in their holiday home in Aspen, Colorado.
She later retracted that claim but in an arrest warrent affidavit, Ms Mueller is quoted as saying that Sheen straddled her on a bed with one hand grasping her neck and the other holding the knife.
She said Sheen told her: "You'd better be in fear. If you tell anybody, I'll kill you." He allegedly added: "Your money means nothing. I have ex-police I can hire who know how to get the job done and they won't leave any traace."
The 44-year-old star of the hit television series Two and a Half Men denied threatening his wife with a knife or throttling her, but told police officers the couple had slapped each other on the arms during a late night row, and that he had snapped two pairs of her eye glasses in front of her, according to the affidavit.
Sheen, who is free on an $85000 bond, also told police the couple had been having marital problems and that his wife, who he married in May 2008, abused alcohol.
The couple began arguing around 3:30 a.m. on Christmas Day, the affidavit said. Ms Mueller, 32, told her husband she wanted a divorce and would get custody of their nine month old twin boys, according to the affidavit.
Sheen told police he "became very upset with this threat (of divorce) because of prior experiences."
He had previously been through a bitter divorce and custody battle with his previous wife, actress Denise Richards, who also claimed that he had abused her and threatened to kill her.
In an audio recording of the call Ms Mueller made to police, the woman can be heard weeping and at times speaking inaudibly. At one point she said: "My husband had me (inaudible) with um, with a knife, and (inaudible) he threatened me." Later, she said: "I thought I was gonna die for one hour."
Police said Sheen surrendered a folding knife with a 4-inch blade which was left opened in his travelling bag.
Chief Deputy District Attorney Arnold Mordkin said the menacing charge was the most serious, usually carrying a sentence of two to eight years in prison and a fine of $2,000 to $500,000.
It is Sheen’s third marriage and the first for Mueller, a real estate investor. There have been reports that their relationship was in trouble following his wife’s decision to rent the house in Colorado while Sheen remained in Los Angeles.
Sheen, a former member of the hollywood 'brat pack' has never made any secret of his “bad boy” life and it is widely accepted that his character, Charlie Harper, in Two and Half Men is based on his own reputation for womanising and bouts of heavy drinking.
